I recently attended a Google Engage conference here in Toronto, and of the many things that I learned that day, one fact that struck me the most was that half of all businesses in Canada do not have a website. Half! It’s not that hey just have a bad website, or a really old website that barely helps anyone, but half of all Canadian businesses have no website at all!
It’s 2011 as I write this, and it’s hard to believe that there are any businesses that can succeed, or even exist, without a website. Not to mention a mobile site, a twitter account, a Facebook page, a LinkedIn profile, a good blog, a YouTube channel… but at the very least, a few good web pages online.
As a citizen of the web, I find this shocking. I’m a web developer, online marketer, and SEO expert and I’ve created this SEO blog in the hopes of helping businesses in Canada, and anyone interested in building websites in general, to get better results from their efforts online.
If you are going to build a website, it had better be a website that people can find. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of files on a server somewhere, and not the beacon of brand–a lighthouse of the modern world–that you need in order for people to know that you exist, and why they should care.
There once was a time, late last century, when having a website was expensive or required a vast amount of technical knowledge. But today it’s easier than ever to create a website and put your proverbial (digital) shingle up. Let me show you how easy it is.
